Throughout the course of a days dietary intake beverages can add a considerable portion of calories to the average diet.

The carbonated sodas that we all enjoy are, of course, high in calories (usually present in the form of sugary corn syrup) can contribute to obesity, tooth decay and other health problems.

The USDA’s dietary guidelines encourage us to switch to healthier alternatives of drinks and foods to moderate our intake of sugar. The guideline committee, told food journalists to be on the lookout for a new set of beverage guidelines that have been submitted to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. King recently gave a speech at the Association of Food Journalists’ annual conference in San Francisco.

Choosing beverages wisely can make the difference between a balanced diet and one that is out of whack. A 12-ounce can of regular soda adds 120 to 140 calories and zero nutrients to the diet. Although 100 percent fruit juices are a healthier choice, they also can tally up calories quickly. For instance, one cup of cranberry juice cocktail with sugar contains 147 calories. Lighter juice versions with artificial sweeteners are also available.

In search of a zero-calorie beverage, many Americans have learned to guzzle unsweetened iced tea on a regular basis. In fact, in this country 40 billion of the 50 billion cups of tea consumed each year are served over ice, according to the Tea Council.

If you’re looking for zero calories, green tea is your best option. It has possible health benefits unlike iced tea. It is rarely served with milk or sugar and contains powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols. These antioxidants may help prevent some types of cancer.

It is thought that these polyphenols scavenge for free radicals before they have time to cause injury to the cells. Green tea has about 30 percent to 40 percent polyphenols compared to black tea that has just 3 percent to 10 percent polyphenols. The average cup of green tea contains 50 milligrams to 150 milligrams of polyphenols, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center (www.umm.edu).

The American Institute for Cancer Research conducts some research that focuses on the link between diet and health. Their studies on lab animals have found that polyphenols can reduce the number and size of tumors. However, human studies have yet to reproduce the same results, leading the FDA.gov to refuse health claims for green tea.

So should Americans try to adopt the green tea habit?

“Drinking massive amounts of green tea will never be able to save us from the ill effects of overeating a poorly balanced diet and living a sedentary lifestyle…. However, for those of us who would like to do a little more to reduce the risk of cancer, replacing three or four cups of coffee or soda per day with green tea is a reasonable step that may bring health benefits,” writes a nutrition expert who wrote a column that appeared on the AICR’s Web site (www.aicr.org) in September.

Green tea is traditionally served hot in Asia and sometimes used as a health remedy. Americans have acquired a taste for convenient health drinks. Several versions of iced green tea have provided an on the go option instead of traditional hot green tea.

Today was the first day I felt bored with this raw food diet.

I think I’ve been eating too many green salads. Varied, delicious but green salads nonetheless. I think I will also use diet pills at united pharmacy support online.

Tomorrow is food shopping day. Tonight I plan.

The Best Laid Plans

In spite of lots of planning for weight loss — making flax-seed crackers, packing tons of raw food stuff, and sending my mother a grocery list — I did not stay on a raw diet during my trip to Pittsburgh.

While I was visiting my family, I had seafood bisque and a corned beef sandwich!!! Rare for me to stray from being a vegetarian. And I completely enjoyed them both.

It’s no problem to me, because I haven’t set out to be 100% raw like some people do. But I could see how it would be hard for someone to transition to a raw food diet if they were feeding or eating with non-raw folks.

My mother was completely great about it, though. She bought me everything I asked for. And I could have easily made choices to maintain the raw food diet law.

Most of the time I was happy eating just flax crackers and avocado along with some fruit. (I even found fresh pineapple and melon chunks at the airport, along with apples oranges and bananas. Though, of course, they weren’t organic.) So, the next time I travel, I won’t feel like I have to pack so much.

A diet may be a fad diet or a healthy diet. People often start a fad diet for fast weight loss. They do not realize that quick weight loss and a fad diet is not the answer for their weight problem. Magic Wands – Nori rolls

I don’t have a dehydrator. (Yet.) This sounds like it may be similar to the tasty raw roll ups I’ve bought. So, I’m saving this recipe for the future.

Magic Wands
Phase 1

1 1⁄2 C pine nuts, unsoaked
1 C walnuts, soaked
3⁄4 C water
1⁄4 C olive oil
3 T lemon juice
2 T Celtic salt
2 t ground ginger
1 t cumin
1 t cayenne
1 t coriander
1 t white pepper
15 nori sheets

Lay out nori sheets onto dehydrator trays. See indian pharma online, our sponsor. Combine all ingredients in high-powered blender and mix until creamy. Spread 2-3 T of mixture onto each sheet of nori, and allow to dehydrate for 1.5 hours at 145°F. Next, roll each sheet of nori up and continue to dehydrate for another 2 hours. These wands may be served warm, or, if desired as travel food, fully dehydrated and stored in sealed baggies for a convenient snack.

He doesn’t specify this in the recipe, but after those first 1.5 hours at 145, you want to turn the temp down to 108. The temperature at which things “qualify” for raw is a hotly debated issue. Cousens is unusual in that he says the dehydrator can be set high for the first hour or two.

This raw foods recipe is 100% raw (Use untoasted nori sheets and sun dried salt, though, come to think of it, I don’t know if the other spices are heat processed.) It’s also vegetarian and vegan.

Raw Vegetarian Roll-Ups

These are so easy, and you’ll find variations in many of the raw food recipe books. I’m posting this here because I always seem to forget about them.

mixed vegetables of your chosing (avocado, carrot, cucumber, cabbage…)
nuts? (walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds)
fresh herbs?(rosemary, basil, chives, cilantro)
fruit? (apple chunks, bananna, raisins, oranges)

dressing

lettuce leaves

Chop the veggies and anything else your adding into smaller than bite size chunks.
Put the dressing in a bowl and fold in the vegetable mixture so everything is well covered with dressing. Spoon veggie mix into the lettuce leaves, pour any remaining dressing over top, and roll up the lettuce.

Today I used chunks of cucumber with avocado, red onion and sprouts.
I made a dressing of 1/2 lemon, 2 T raw tahini, water, cumin and sea salt.

BTW, my idea of a veggie roll-up is a big drippy handful of a roll-up, more like a lettuce “fold-over”. Like when you ordered a sandwich at a restaurant and were afraid to put it down once you picked it up because it would fall apart and the plate was already soggy. That’s how I like my roll-ups. (So I guess I won’t be making them when company comes over.)

Maureen Callahan, MS, RD reviews the Jenny Craig Diet an writes, Plans start at 1,200 calories — probably a little lower than many health experts might recommend, but it should be enough to provide dieters with the nutrients they need. (If possible, opt for 1,500 calories. If you exercise, this is more realistic.) A good thing: The complete program encompasses exercise advice and behavior training.

Anne Collins reviews the Jenny Craig Diet and writes about Menu Plans, and writes, All menu plans that are nutritionally balanced according to the recommendations of the USDA Food Guide Pyramid and U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Clients can choose from more than 70 food products… The Jenny Craig Program is based on the consumption of pre-packaged meals. This is very convenient to begin with but this close dietary supervision can cause problems once the diet ends. The dieter may not be ready to “go it alone.” To put it another way, short-term weight loss goals take priority over the need to learn new eating habits.

Northwestern University reviews the Jenny Craig Diet Program and writes, Since 90% of Jenny Craig’s clientele is female, overweight men may feel uncomfortable participating in this program… Clients are required to have a 15-minute personal in-person or phone consultation weekly with Jenny Craig (who lack formal nutrition/behavior training) to help clients meet their weight loss goals. A variety of online pharm support group or united pharmacy support tools such as BMI calculator, interactive journal, menu planner, weight tracker, chat room and e-newsletters are available to strengthen clients motivation to achieve desired weight loss goals.

Compare Diets reviews the Jenny Craig Diet Program and writes about alternatives, There are alternatives to consider as well. If you’re looking for a cheaper Jenny Craig-style diet program, you can participate in the eDiets version of Jenny Craig which takes advantage of cheap frozen food items you can locate at your local grocery store. This version of Jenny Craig is available at lower cost than the real thing and pretty much just as effective. You won’t benefit from the personalized one-on-one counseling that the traditional Jenny Craig plan offers, but then you won’t have to do any of the dreaded weigh-ins.

Pineapple Carrot Salad

–While a food processor makes short work of the chopping, this recipe can be made “by hand.”–

1 fresh pineapple, cut in chunks
2-4 carrots shredded (can shred, julienne or dice by hand)
1-2 scallions chopped (put in the food processor, or chop by hand)
1/4 c shredded dried coconut

optional additions:

1/4 c raw pecans, chopped (soak in water for 3-6 hours for life force enhancement and easier digestion)

and /or

4 dates, pitted and chopped (soak in water to plump for up to 30 minutes if they’re very dry.)

For a less savory version, omit the scallions. If you’re not using the dates or pecans, start with just one scallion so the flavor doesn’t overwhelm the other ingredients.

Mix everything together in a bowl and try to let it sit for 20 minutes so the flavors meld. You could serve this as is, on a bed of lettuce, or put inside a lettuce leaf or purple cabbage for a roll-up.
